‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Heads For $17M+ Tuesday

Avatar: The Way of Water, from 20th Century Studios and Disney, is expected to make $17 million on Tuesday. This could beat Minions: Rise of Gru’s first Tuesday, which made $17.5 million and make it the best Tuesday of 2022.

Some rival studios are predicting higher numbers, but we’ll have to wait until the morning to know for sure. On its fifth day, the sequel directed by James Cameron will have made $167.3 million in the United States.

I’ve heard that Avatar 2 has about $8M in pre-sales for the next weekend, which is good for a weekend 2 of a movie, according to a source in the movie business. Imax got 14% of Avatar 2’s $16 million in ticket sales on Monday, which is more than the 12.3% it got over the weekend.

The current competition for Avatar 2 seems to be Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. That Lucasfilm movie made $17.5 million on its first Tuesday. Avatar 2 could do better than that. Rogue One also made $96.1 million in its second 4-day weekend, the last time Christmas was on a Sunday like it is this year. It’s a number that Avatar 2 could probably reach between next Friday and Monday.

The second weekend of the first Avatar also fell over Christmas, but the holiday was on a Friday (which is better than the holiday falling on a Saturday or Sunday). In 2009, the movie made $75.6M in its second weekend, which was only 1.8% less than the $77M it made in its first three days. Amazing.

Avatar 2 will make more than $500 million around the world today. This year, the sequel helped Disney break the $4 billion mark at the worldwide box office. This is the most any studio has ever made in a year.

It opens tomorrow, with no sneak peeks tonight. That sequel, directed by Joel Crawford and Juan Mercado, could make between $15M and $20M in four days.
