Apple Next External Display: When Will It Come Out?

Apple is rumored to be working on a brand-new external display that will come out in a few months and have a lot of advanced features that make it better than the company’s two current monitors.

The display, which is rumored to come out in early 2023, is expected to cost somewhere between the $1,599 Studio Display and the $4,999 Pro Display XDR, but we don’t yet know more about where it will fit in the market or how much it will cost.

Even though not much is known about the design of the display, it is likely to look like the Studio Display or the Pro Display XDR. There have been rumors for the past year that the new display will have at least five essential features.

27-Inch Panel

The screen size of the monitor is expected to be 27 inches. This would be the same as the Studio Display and five inches shorter than the Pro Display XDR.

Apple has liked the 27-inch screen size for a long time. It was available on the Thunderbolt Display, the iMac, and the UltraFine 5K monitor, which was made in partnership with LG. Even though some creative professionals may not be able to use it because they need a bigger monitor like the Pro Display XDR, the 27-inch size will likely make it easy for a lot of people to use.

The rumor that the monitor will have the same size screen as the Studio Display is another sign that it will need more advanced features to be priced higher.

Mini-LED Technology

Ross Young, an analyst at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), says that the next monitor from Apple will be the first to have a mini-LED panel.

Mini-LED technology would be much better than the Studio Display in terms of contrast and black levels.

Apple’s first product with a mini-LED screen was the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in 2021. Later that year, the company added the technology to its 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. A mini-LED display this size could be very useful for creative professionals who work with HDR content and need high contrast. It could also provide a consistent experience when used with these other mini-LED machines.

Support for ProMotion

Apple’s next external display may support ProMotion, which is already available on the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. This would allow the refresh rate to be changed up to 120Hz.

Like mini-LED, this feature would make the experience of using the display with a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro the same, but it could also help with specific tasks, like gaming.

Thunderbolt Ports

Since the new display will cost more than the Studio Display, which only has one Thunderbolt port, it may have more Thunderbolt ports.

Since each Studio Display only has one Thunderbolt port, connecting them in a chain is impossible. However, since Apple’s next display is likely to be a higher-end model, daisy chaining may be a feature that Apple wants to add, especially since professional users are more likely to use more than one monitor. If that’s the case, it will need more than one Thunderbolt port, which could connect other high-bandwidth, high-demand devices.

Silicon Chip from Apple

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg recently said that he thinks Apple’s new external monitors will be powered by Apple silicon chips.

The Studio Display was the first Apple monitor with a custom silicon chip. The A13 Bionic was first used in the iPhone 11 line and is now used in the ninth-generation iPad. The chip lets the monitor run a version of iOS, get software updates, and offer on-device features like Center Stage. We don’t know what chip will be in the new monitor, but the A13 Bionic seems to be the most likely choice since it is already used in the Studio Display and better performance and efficiency wouldn’t make a big difference for this type of device.

Launch Date

Ross Young thought that Apple would show off the display at WWDC in June, but he said in May that it wouldn’t come out until October because of design problems. Apple didn’t make its October goal, so Young thinks the company is now aiming for early 2023. He first mentioned this time frame in July on The MacRumors Show podcast.

Apple has had trouble keeping up with demand for its products, like Macs and displays, all through 2022. This may be one reason why the launch has been delayed.

Young recently said that he thinks Apple’s new high-end external monitor will come out in the first quarter of 2023, which is January through March. Apple is also expected to release new MacBook Pros in the first quarter of 2023. The company could announce the new monitor simultaneously, especially if both have mini-LED displays supporting ProMotion.
