In 2023 and beyond, Netflix will release a plethora of original animated feature films. Here is an ever-expanding list of all the animated films we know are currently in production or planning stages.
To put it mildly, 2021 was a rough year for Netflix Animation. While the team was responsible for some of Netflix’s best-animated films, they also had to deal with major layoffs, a shift in leadership, and a complete overhaul of their organizational structure.
Netflix subscribers in the US can watch the whole catalogs of DreamWorks, Illumination, and Sony Pictures Animation, in addition to all of Netflix’s original animated features.

Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget
It’s hard to believe, but by the time this sequel is released, it will have been 23 years since DreamWorks launched the first Chicken Run.
Now, a stellar ensemble is assembling for a brand new installment. The latest installment features the voice talents of Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones), Zachary Levi (Chuck), and Thandiwe Newton (Westworld).
Ginger’s happy ending appears to be complete when she and Rocky have a daughter whom they name Molly. Meanwhile, back on the mainland, the chickens are in danger of a new and terrifying danger. This time, Ginger and her crew are breaking in, no matter what the cost to their own just-earned independence.
It’s an “epic adventure tale of humankind’s quest for fire told through the eyes of young Dikika who embarks on an impossible race to a distant volcano to retrieve the precious spark that will save her tribe” in this hand-drawn animated feature film from the director of Netflix‘s beloved Christmas movie Klaus.
High in the Clouds
This animated feature film for the whole family is based on the Paul McCartney book of the same name and tells the story of a squirrel who sets out to locate a safe haven for abused and abandoned animals. The film will feature new music composed by the member of The Beatles.
Director Timothy Reckart’s prior credits include the short films Head Over Heels (2012) and The Star (2017). It’s been stated that filming occurred between August 2018 and May 2022.
Our information suggests the film will be released in the summer of 2023, namely on July 3 of that year.
The new animated feature picture from the director of Netflix‘s acclaimed mini-series Maya and the Three will be announced in March 2022. In it, Gabriel Iglesias will play the lead role of a teenage Chacho who dons a mask to compete in wrestling and becomes a legendary champion.
This animated adaptation of the ND Stevenson novel was in development at 20th Century Fox until Disney bought the rights and ultimately scrapped the project.
Chlo Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Lee Yang all lend their voices to the film.
Onyeka And The Academy Of The Sun
Will Smith’s production firm, in which David Oyelowo shares producing credits, announced the film in February 2022.
The protagonist, a teenager, learns that she possesses extraordinary abilities and decides to journey to Nigeria to explore more about her background. It was there that she discovered a danger to the magical community she had just joined.
In this animated musical film, a little Indian American girl is inspired to learn more about her background after receiving a mysterious pashmina. Early in 2019, it was revealed that production on the film would begin.
As part of the press release, Ashok Amritraj said, “Pashmina is a fantastic coming-of-age narrative that will relate with everyone who has ever felt like an outcast and one that I feel Netflix families throughout the world will love watching together.”
This animated comedy, based on a children’s book written by Lupita Nyong’o, was unveiled all the way back in February of 2021.
Sulwe’s skin is darker than everyone else’s in her family or at her school. She initially for lighter skin, but after a mysterious event, she learns to appreciate her original shade.
This new holiday-themed animated feature film was inspired by children’s books written by Richard Curtis.

The Family Treehorn
The book by Florence Parry Heide that inspired this film was purchased from Paramount Animation and produced by Netflix’s in-house studio Animal Logic under the title The Shrinking of Treehorn.
The film is Ron Howard’s first foray into animated features, and it’s about a kid who starts getting smaller and smaller after playing a mysterious board game, but his parents don’t seem to notice.
This comic book-based animated feature picture has been in the works for almost a decade, having begun as a Kickstarter campaign.
The studio behind Love, Death, and Robots revealed in the summer of 2022 that Netflix had acquired the film rights and will distribute the picture.
The Magician’s Elephant
The Magician’s Elephant, produced by the company Netflix bought in 2022, is scheduled for release in the middle of 2023.
This film is based on a children’s novel by Kate DiCamillo and depicts the story of an orphan boy who is told by a fate teller that an elephant would take him to his missing sister.
The film will feature the voice acting talents of Pixies Davies, Noah Jupe, and Benedict Wong.
The Monkey King
Steve Bencich and Ron J. Friedman authored the story for this new animated adventure film, which will be directed by the same person who oversaw The Boxtrolls.

The Witch Boy
Vertigo Entertainment (The Lego Movie) is producing an animated film based on the comic novels by Molly Know Ostertag, with HAIM contributing to the soundtrack.
Aster is taken aback by the astonishing development of his witch talents in a hidden magical community where girls are born witches and boys mature into shapeshifters. When an unknown threat appears, Aster sets out on a quest to learn more about who he is, how his abilities work, and how the magical world works.
Thelma the Unicorn
The novel upon which this film is based was written by Aaron Blabey, a lauded Australian author for young adults. In 2019, it was initially picked up by Netflix.
Thelma the Pony gets her wish of becoming a unicorn granted by a rare pink and glitter filled moment of fate, catapulting her to instant international pop-superstar status, but at a price. Despite lacking glitter, Thelma the Unicorn is a happy tale about accepting oneself for who one is.
A new animated film about the popular Japanese hero is beginning to veer further toward the realm of anime.
This new feature film comes from the mind of the man that brought you Lost Ollie on Netflix, and it’s about a famous baseball player who moves back to Japan and assumes the identity of Ultraman to continue his family’s heritage.
Wallace & Gromit
After making their debut in 1989 on British television and spawning a number of sequels, prequels, and television series, Wallace & Gromit is finally returning to the big screen. In the UK, the film will be broadcast on the BBC, and on Netflix for the rest of the world.
In the movie, Gromit starts to worry that Wallace is too reliant on his creations. When Wallace’s “Smart Gnome” starts acting independently, it’s up to Gromit to save his master from some very bad people (otherwise Wallace might never be able to invent again)!
It has been verified that this Film will be available on Netflix in 2024, while we anticipate public updates in 2023.
