Andrew Tate, an “alpha male” influencer and podcaster who has called himself “absolutely a misogynist” in videos and has been banned from TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, and his brother Tristan were arrested in Romania by police looking into organized crime, human trafficking, and rape.

Police took him away from his home in Romania one day after his Twitter fight with young environmental activist Greta Thunberg went viral. He insulted her by bragging about his 33 cars and their “enormous emissions,” but she wasn’t impressed by their size. Tate, who was born in the US and is a British citizen, said in a now-deleted YouTube video that “40%” of the reason he moved to Romania was “because in Eastern Europe, none of this garbage flies.” He seemed to be talking about claims of sexual assault made during the “MeToo” era.

The Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) did not directly name Tate in a translated statement. Still, it did confirm that search warrants were carried out at five homes and that four people “reasonably suspected” of criminal activity were taken in for questioning. The statement said that they would be held for 24 hours, but Reuters says that prosecutors are asking the court for permission to hold Tate and the others for up to 30 days.

Two British citizens, who are considered Tate and his brother, and two Romanian citizens are being questioned.

In the statement, DIICOT says it found six people the group sexually exploited. It describes a so-called “loverboy” scheme in which British citizens would pretend to be in a romantic relationship with the victims, bring them to Romania, and then use physical violence and psychological manipulation to force the victims to make porn. Local news source G4, as reported by The Daily Beast, says that the material was sold online through sites like OnlyFans. The suspects used the money to buy cars, houses, and cryptocurrency.

Antena 3 CNN, a Romanian news station, says that along with the two brothers, a former policewoman was also brought to the DIICOT headquarters to be questioned. The Romanian newspaper Gandul shared a video of Tate being led away from a luxury villa that looks like the one in some of his videos.

This is the second time investigators have been there. In April, the US embassy received a complaint that an American citizen was being held against his will at the Tates’ home. The brothers were also taken in at that time and questioned before being let go. Since then, Gandul says, prosecutors have been gathering evidence and waiting for the Tate brothers to be in the country so they can catch them.

Reports say that this raid happened because Tate’s response to Thunberg’s tweet telling him to get a life was a video of him eating pizza from a Romanian pizza chain, which seemed to show where he was at the time. Twitter was one of the places where Tate was banned. Vox.com says that after five years, his account was turned back on in November.

The authorities haven’t confirmed that, but Gandul said that police were called in after signs on social media showed that the brothers were in Romania.
