Amazon Is Shutting Downs Its AmazonSmile Charity Platform

The AmazonSmile charity program will end at the end of the month. The e-commerce giant announced a number of ways to cut costs, including letting go of thousands of employees, at the same time as the closing.

The AmazonSmile program was like a layer on top of the regular Amazon site. It lets people shop as usual, but they could choose a charity to which Amazon would donate 0.5% of the cost of all eligible products. Amazon says that more than $377 million has been passed through the program since it began in 2013. However, in its notice of closing the program, Amazon said that this amount was insufficient to keep it going.

AmazonSmile will no longer be available after February 20.

In a press release, the company said, “After almost a decade, the program has not grown to create the impact that we had originally hoped.” “With so many eligible organizations — more than 1 million globally — our ability to have an impact was often spread too thin.”

AmazonSmile will stop working on February 20. Participating charities will still be able to get donations until the program ends, and Amazon has said that it will give each of them a one-time donation “equivalent to three months of what they earned through the program in 2022.”

Amazon has been trying to cut costs and close down AmazonSmile since November 2022, when it became the first public company to lose $1 trillion in market value. Amazon said it would cut more than 18,000 jobs in the same month. Over the past year, it has shut down other operations, such as its Amazon Care telehealth service and Fabric.com retail site, and dropped plans to build 42 new buildings.
