Alec Baldwin Will Be Charged for the Fatal Shooting on the Rust Set

Alec Baldwin will face involuntary manslaughter charges after a cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on set after the actor accidentally discharged a prop gun.

Mr Baldwin was practicing a scene for the Western film Rust when it was shot in October 2021 on a ranch outside Sante Fe, New Mexico. Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who was in charge of the movie’s weapons, will also be charged with manslaughter.

Neither one has said anything about the charges. In a statement on Thursday, the District Attorney for Santa Fe, Mary Carmack-Altwies, said that charges would be brought against them by the end of the month.

“Actor and producer Alec Baldwin and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will each be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter,” the statement read. “After a thorough review of the evidence… I have determined that there is sufficient evidence.”

“On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice,” she said. If they are found guilty, they could spend up to 18 months in jail and pay a $5,000 (£4,040) fine. Prosecutors said that a jury will decide their fate.

Joel Souza, who makes movies, was also hurt in the shooting, but prosecutors said they wouldn’t charge him for that. Mr. Baldwin said that the gun had gone off by accident after the shooting. He also said that he didn’t pull the gun’s trigger and didn’t know it was loaded.

“I don’t know what happened on that set. I don’t know how that bullet arrived in that gun. I don’t know,” he said in December 2021.
