Last Friday, the company announced the launch of AirPods Pro 2 which is the first new version of the product since its initial release in 2019. The accompanying charging case has seen some of the most significant upgrades, including the addition of a new lanyard holster, Find My integration and built-in speakers, among other enhancements.
A new CT scanner look at the AirPods Pro 2 from Lumafield shows an inside look at the AirPods Pro 2 charging case and it appears that this new lanyard holster may have more to offer than meets the eye. The new charging case for the AirPods Pro 2 is virtually indistinguishable from the case for the first generation of AirPods in terms of its internal layout.
It is possible to keep the lid closed and the earbuds in place thanks to the presence of two batteries along the main logic board of the device. In addition, there are four magnets that support MagSafe charging that is located all around the wireless charging coil.
Look at the metal eyelet that is located on the bottom of the charging case. This is the first thing that you need to pay attention to. Apple asserts that this is only for the lanyard holster but CT scans suggest that there may be something else here:
Apple makes the claim that it has a lanyard but the design is not particularly impressive. It consists of a hidden tail that is attached to a metal pad that wraps around the Lightning port. It could be an antenna that will support improved Find My tracking.
It is not entirely clear at this juncture whether or not this is true. At some point in time, the employees of iFixit will most likely conduct a physical teardown, which may result in unselection. However, it would make sense for Apple to need to make some modifications to the case in order to support Find Mine in an appropriate manner.
