Sister Act 3: When Will The Movie Be Released?

If you lived in the 1990s, there’s no way you didn’t see something Whoopi Goldberg did. You might know Whoopi Goldberg now as one of the hosts of “The View,” but 30 years ago, she was a big star in movies like “The Color Purple,” “Ghost,” and “The Lion King.” She was the host of the show when she wasn’t winning an Oscar. Now, with a little help from Tyler Perry, who can’t be stopped, Goldberg will play one of her most famous movie roles again in Sister Act 3.

Goldberg has been in a number of successful movies, but Sister Act is probably the most well-known. The movie came out in 1992 and was about a lounge singer named Deloris Wilson (Whoopi Goldberg) who goes into witness protection after seeing her mob-connected boyfriend Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) kill an informant. Deloris hides as a nun in a convent, where she soon helps the struggling choir get back on its feet.

The movie was a big hit at the box office, making over $230 million around the world (via Box Office Mojo). The movie was so popular that a sequel came out a year later. However, Sister Act 2 didn’t do very well at the box office and got a lot of bad reviews (via Rotten Tomatoes).

Now, 30 years later, and after a Broadway musical based on the movies did well, Disney+ is bringing the franchise back to life. In a tweet from December, Disney said that Sister Act 3 was “in development” and that Goldberg and Perry would be co-producing and that Goldberg would also be back to star in the movie.

When Is Sister Act 3 Coming Out?

Now that we know there will be a Sister Act 3 movie, making the whole series a trilogy, many fans are probably wondering: When can we see it?

Since the movie was officially put into production in the middle of December 2020, not much is known about when it will come out. Since the project was just announced and filming won’t start until the end of 2021, it seems likely that the movie won’t come out until at least 2022.

Even though the release date is still unknown, the fact that Perry is producing is probably a good sign. According to CBS News, Perry’s film studio in Georgia was one of the first to start making movies again last summer after COVID-19 stopped many studios from doing so.

Fans will have to be patient like nuns, even though it will be hard to wait for Whoopi to get back into her routine.

Who Will Be In Sister Act 3?

In addition to Goldberg’s great comedic skills and the fun songs, the original Sister Act was a big hit because of its talented supporting cast.

Variety said that Kathy Najimy, who played the happy Sister Mary Patrick, and Mary Wickes, who played the sarcastic Sister Mary Lazarus, gave Sister Act’s funny parts a “major boost,” while Maggie Smith’s “solid performance” as Mother Superior gave the movie the “requisite warmth.” Who could forget Najimy’s famous dance scene to Dee Dee Sharp’s “Gravy”?

Wickes died in 1995, which was sad. But Najimy, who is also in the upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel, said earlier this month on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show that she would be interested in joining the sequel because filming the first two movies was fun and, unlike Hocus Pocus, she would spend less time in the makeup chair. “Do you know why I like that?” she asked. “No hair, no makeup, and no spankings.” “I win both ways,” she said.

As for Smith, the star of Downton Abbey hasn’t said yet if she will be back for the third movie. Though, during a 2017 Sister Act reunion on The View, the famous actress said she had “such fond memories of when we did those crazy, crazy, crazy films.”

But Goldberg is no slouch. She told James Corden on The Late Late Show in October that she and the team were “working hard” to figure out how to get the gang back together.

She also told Corden, “Bad singing, great singing, OK singing, and then nuns. What’s better than that?”

What Is Sister Act 3 About?

The plot of the upcoming sequel is still not clear. We know that Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit ended with Deloris keeping St. Francis Academy from closing because she won a choir competition, but nobody knows what will happen next in the third movie.

We do know that Karin Gist, who wrote and produced Mixed-ish and Star, and Regina Hicks, who wrote and produced Insecurely, will write the script for the third movie. We don’t know what the movie will be about, but we have some ideas for titles. In a December interview on The Late Show, Goldberg and Stephen Colbert suggested titles like “Oh My God It Still Fits,” “Backer in the Habit,” and “Blacker in the Habit.”

No matter what they call it, fans will be happy to see Goldberg and the nuns get back into their habits for a third movie.
