19 Dead After Plane Crashes Into Lake Victoria In Tanzania

The prime minister of Tanzania said that a plane crashed into Lake Victoria on Sunday morning as it was trying to land at an airport. 19 people on board were killed. A high-ranking police officer said that it was raining when the plane fell into the water. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa changed the number of deaths from three, which had been saying before. Local authorities said early Sunday that 26 of the 43 people on the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam were saved and taken to a hospital. It wasn’t clear if the new number of deaths included people who died at the hospital.

Photos showed that most of the plane, which was on its way to Bukoba Airport, was in the lake. Precision Air is an airline that is based in Tanzania.

William Mwampaghale, who is in charge of police in Kagera province, told reporters, “We were able to save quite a few people. Rescue workers try to get the Precision Air passenger plane out of Lake Victoria in Bukoba, Tanzania, on November 6, 2022.

“The plane ran into trouble and bad weather when it was about 100 meters (328 feet) in the air. It was raining, and the plane fell into the water,” he said.

Mwampaghale said that people were still trying to help.

Tanzania Precision Air Crash: ‘I Tried To Save Pilots But Was Knocked Unconscious

A fisherman who was one of the first people to get to the site of Sunday’s plane crash in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria, which killed 19 people, has talked about how he tried to save the pilots who were stuck in the cockpit and how he almost died trying to save them. Majaliwa Jackson was interviewed from his hospital bed in Bukoba, a town on a lake. He said he panicked when he saw the passenger plane coming from the wrong direction and then crash into the lake.

He and three other fishermen rushed to the scene and helped open the back door by smashing it with a rowing oar. This allowed passengers in the back of the plane to be saved. Mr. Jackson said that he then moved to the front and jumped into the water. Then, he and one of the pilots talked to each other through the window of the cockpit.

“He told me to break the window screen, so I got out of the water and asked the airport security guards if they had any tools we could use.

“They gave me an axe, but a man with a loudspeaker stopped me from going down and breaking the screen. He said that they were already talking to the pilots and that there was no water in the cockpit,” Mr. Jackson said. After being stopped, he “dove back and waved goodbye to the pilot,” he said. But then the pilot said he still wanted to be saved.

“He showed me where the emergency door was. We tried to pull it with other boats, but the rope broke and hit me in the face, knocking me out. “The next thing I knew, I was at the hospital,” said Mr. Jackson. Both pilots are among the 19 people who have been confirmed to have died when the plane crashed near the lake. The plane was flown by Precision Air, which is Tanzania’s largest private airline.

The plane was pulled closer to the shore of Lake Victoria with ropes. Precision Air says that 24 of the 43 people on board made it out alive. At the local football stadium in Bukoba, a funeral service for the 19 people who died is taking place. The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, is one of the hundreds of people at the service. He had said earlier that a thorough investigation would be done to find out what caused the crash.

The plane took off from Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial capital, on Sunday. It was supposed to make a stop in Mwanza, but it crashed on its way to Bukoba airport at about 8:50 local time (5:50 GMT).
