Police say a man was killed and four others were injured when a driver ignored a red light at an intersection in west Phoenix on Friday.

A collision was reported to have occurred around 3 p.m. near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road. According to the investigation, a man driving a car containing another man and a teenage boy was speeding west on Thomas Road when they collided with a vehicle making a left turn into 75th Avenue.

Miguel Ornelas Campos, 25, the turning car driver, was pronounced dead at the site. All the people in the speeding car were brought to the emergency room.

Campos’ engine exploded in the collision and struck a third vehicle traveling west on Thomas Road. The passengers of the third vehicle escaped harm.

A guy crossing the street adjacent to the northwest corner of the intersection was struck by flying debris and brought to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

For the time being, the area between 75th Avenue and Thomas Road is closed in both directions by police. A lack of details suggests that impairment played a role in the collision.
